Cyber attacks: from public to private, an expanding risk

Table of Contents

A wave of cyber attacks hit Italy over the last weekend, targeting ministries, armed forces and public transport companies. At the centre of the actions were groups such as Noname057(16), which exploited DDoS attacks to paralyse institutional websites and show, once again, the vulnerability of the national digital infrastructure. But if the focus has been on damage to the public sector, the latest developments paint a broader and more worrying picture: private companies are becoming the new favourite target of cybercriminals. If the focus has been on public entities, behind the scenes a worrying trend is gaining strength: cybercriminals are increasingly targeting companies. Recent analyses indicate that attacks targeting the private sector have grown by more than 20 per cent in one year, with particularly high peaks in the healthcare and financial sectors. (Clusit Report 2024 – ed. October 2024).

In many cases, cybercriminals exploit technological vulnerabilities and the absence of adequate security protocols, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises. The collection and management of data of high economic value (customers, transactions, confidential projects) make businesses an extremely lucrative target.

The urgency to invest in IT security

The attacks that emerged over the weekend show how crucial it is to strengthen digital protection. Some estimates indicate that when a company suffers a ransomware attack, the time needed to restore operations can exceed two weeks, with economic losses reaching several hundred thousand euros. Added to this are the image damages, which are difficult to quantify in the short term but often heavy in the long run. In the current context, prevention becomes the main line of defence: strengthening systems and networks, training staff in the recognition of possible threats and setting up emergency procedures can significantly reduce risks. In a digital landscape where there are no longer any barriers between public and private, attackers choose the most vulnerable target.
